The first thing we needed was a theme for our big night. For this we decided on
the Guardian of the Darkness costume party which we found roughed out on a web
page on the internet. We used the basic idea and then filled in the voids. The
premise is rather simple, the guests all received an Amulet of Life along with
their invitation in the mail. They are instructed to wear this to the party, as
their life depends on it.
After the initiation to the party through the haunted garage and finally inside
the house, each guest is given a candle to light and place on the Alter of
Death. The host and hostess are both wearing about 4 or 5 amulets each. And as a
door prize one of the lucky guests (the one with the best costume)
is presented
with the most coveted Death Amulet in addition. The death amulet
needs to look different from all
the others. Use your imagination.
We used a vampire medallion with
black ribbon for this and for the
Amulets of Life we used teardrop
crystals from the fabric supply
with heavy black & silver thread
for the necklace.
The object is to not say the word
"no" (be sure to tell your guests
that this must be used in the
context of "no" rather than
"know"!) If you are caught saying
the word no, you loose your amulet
to the person who caught you saying
it or the first person who called
you on it. That person takes the
amulet and adds it to their
collection. Some people are really
good at not saying no, but alas,
some are not, so be prepared for
immediate losses of amulets. This
is where the party gets
interesting.
The person who is left without an
amulet may continue to mingle in
the crowd, attaining more amulets
by catching others saying no, until
the Guardian of Darkness catches
them naked without their protective
amulet of life.
When the Guardian
finds the pitiful victim, the
Guardian announces to the entire
party there will be a SLAYING at
the Alter of Death and everyone
must
attend.
The Guardian then leads the unlucky
participant to the Alter and the
person who has lost their amulet
blows out the flame of their candle
on the alter. Then the Guardian
uses a large sword or knife to
execute the victim. The death is
should be as loud, agonizing and
animated as possible, as the best
death receives a door prize at the
end of the evening.
Once the victim dies,
they can rejoin the drinks and
conversation,
but they are done with the game.
The person who wins the Death
Amulet at the beginning of the
night obviously stands a better
chance of winning the game, as they
have the benefit of having to lose
both the amulet AND the Death
Amulet before they can die.
However, if they do lose the Death
Amulet, they will be losing it to
the next Guardian, so they will
certainly be slain upon the loss of
it!
This game can last for a long time,
even with only 12 players, so get
an early start! Be sure to explain
the rules clearly before starting
and don't start the game
until
after everyone has dispersed from
the group info session for at least
5 minutes. (Set a time like 7:15
the game will begin) This way the
players can have a moment to forget
about the need not to say NO, and
it will start sort of out of left
field. We had a great time. Don't
forget to tell everyone that they
can build up immunity by getting
all the amulets. In the event of a
tie, the simple flip of a coin can
call out the winner of the evening.
It was fun and I would
host this theme again.
Rest
In Pieces.
